So much for being caught up! So ... I will try again to get and STAY current. The subject of this email was: "I'm a HURRICANE survivor!!" (I bet she had no idea that she could honestly say that within just a few weeks ;)
Hey Everyone!
Psych!!!!! There were no hurricanes. Got ya though huh? :) Sorry mom, you're probably not thinking that was very funny. Although it does rain a lot, and yesterday was pretty bad with flooding in some areas. Get this, they even canceled church in some places. For rain! That's a new one. And they pulled us all together during the 3rd hour of church for hurricane preparedness. 'Tis the season I guess. But our mission is so on it. We're all required to have 72 hr kits and other kits of stuff that's just ready to go if we ever have to evacuate (which won't happen) so don't worry :)
Jeff is doing awesome, he's getting baptized Friday. And Mahala is coming along great. We're teaching her the Law of Chastity this week. Which really needs to happen because she needs to move out, oh - and modesty. She wears what she can to church (always the same) but it's time we taught her about how we treat our bodies. Although she just found out that her drunk of a boyfriend (who is awful!) not only has another girlfriend here, but a wife and kid in Honduras. Yeah, needless to say they aren't together anymore, but she's still living in that house. She had another guy offer to let her move in (but we know that's not gonna qualify her for baptism either). Anway, once we explain the commandment to her, I have no fears that she'll have the desire to move out. And I know that even though right now we can't see where she'll go, the Lord will provide a way. It's crazy the things He's already done to put things into motion to prepare her. It will be fun to one day tell you these people's full story, but sorry, no time for epistles today :)
There are two sisters in the mission called the traveling sisters. They go around the mission going on exchanges with the sisters. They came here last week, and that was fun because we were able to double work the area. And one plays b-ball so we went and played with the elders at 5:30 in the morning. It was so awesome to get a real workout!! Plus I always love some fun b-ball :) Hopefully we'll get to go more, it's not Hna Palmer's favorite thing, so I just want to be sensitive to that.
I hear/see some of the craziest stuff in church here. Only to be expected with all the investigators. Like sweet Amy (one of the elders investigators) in her leopard short dress with her leopard purse and her leopard umbrella being super outspoken during hurricane preparedness about how you need to bring "lots of toilet paper! and lots of diarrhea medicine!" Haha, oh my! And we're pretty sure that the lady who sat next to us in Gospel Principles was a bit drunk. Well, it's always good to keep a sense of humor around here :)
Things are still slow on the Spanish side. We'll just keep working and see what happens. Makes it hard with me needing to learn Spanish. Sometimes I start to wonder if I have the discipline needed to learn it this way - on my own, not immersed, or even teaching anyone in Spanish. But, I have to so I just keep pluggin' along. I don't see improvement yet, but have to have faith it'll come. Also, I do definitely have "gift of tongues" moments so I must be doing something right. Keeps me humble and remembering I CANNOT do it on my own. One day we shared a spiritual thought with a Spanish family. I was able to say some things, but didn't know if they were right. But I don't just sit quiet and not try. Anyway, I didn't think much of it. After we left, Sister Palmer was so happy. SHe looked at me and said, "you had a gift of tongues moment!" Huh, interesting how it just works in subtle ways.
Thanks for the update on what's going on with everyone there. And I am SOOOO excited about what you're sending me Dad!! it's not a rock is it? Maybe shaped like a 3D triangle... :D We definitely don't get as much mail here as in the MTC. :) What with no Dear Elders and all. I loved getting Garrett's letter!
I LOVED getting your emails this week. I was literally laughing sitting here in the library!!! Like "Buddy, LAY DOWN!" Give Bud an extra pat on the head for me. Or better yet, throw the ball a little extra for me :) How is Doc by the way? And other members in the ward? How is Chelsea? Where'd she decide to go to school? Give her a hug for me!
Well, it's time for me to go! Have an awesome week. Make good choices. Find a little way to do something nice for someone else in the family that you might not normally do. Everyone could always use a bit of extra love :) Keep workin hard. Even though we're far apart, as we all work towards our eternal goals, we'll eventually land ourselves in the Celestial Kingdom as an eternal family!
Tons of Love!
