Hey everyone! I know I'm not in Texas yet, but I'm trying to learn my mission language, so I figured I'd start showing off what I know already! haha!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!! I love you soooo much! I was thinking about you all day, and when I told one of the Elders in my district, Elder Peterson, he said to tell you, "What's up, Old Man!" haha, so way to be officially 50 - the age you've been claiming to be for the last two years! :D Also, I have something I think you'll like coming in the mail, hopefully It'll show up eventually, but it won't be for some time. I think they said to allow 10 business days.... Anyway, love you and happy birthday a tad late!

I've attached a few pictures, sorry they're coming weird, I think they're too big too show the thumbnail versions in the email. Just so you know the picture of the 4 girls in front of the temple is all the sisters in my district, and Sis Day is standing right next to me, then Sis Carter, then Sis Doney. Hopefully they come through all right!

Anyway, what another marvelous week! It's weird how much has happened that you have no idea about. Usually I would tell you stuff as we go! Like this Wednesday, I got to be a host for new missionaries entering the MTC! It was so cool to see all the new Elders and Sisters come in, and hopefully make that transition a little easier for the three sisters I helped. It was a little bit of a tear jerker to see everyone going through the emotions I had just felt two weeks ago. It was actually harder to see the moms and dads driving away crying though than the missionaries because it made me think of you mom and dad. Anyway, good times! It was such a fun break from the daily normal and a fun way to serve the new missionaries.

I also have my travel itinerary for going to Texas! We leave the MTC at 3:50 Tuesday morning! Then my flight leaves at 8:25, so if I had to guess I'd say I get to call you around 5:30 - 6 Utah time. So I guess around 5 for all y'all at home. Sorry it's so early! But it'll be nice to talk to you for a little bit! Then I'll be in Texas by 1 and in the field! I'm sooooo excited to be out in Texas!

When I was hosting yesterday, I ran into Caleb Blackmore! I didn't realize he was coming while I was still here, so that was super fun to see him for just a minute! If you see Sis. Blackmore, you can tell her he's doing great! Though she probably got an email from him already.

On Tuesday we had a great devotional from Elder Nattress of the 70. He talked a lot about "Be not afraid only believe" as found in Mark 5:36. He told the story of how President Hinckley carried that phrase with him on a 3x5 card his whole mission, and gave us a 3x5 card so we can do the same. I now have that phrase in my bag and right now I'm planning on never taking it out. Especially after the spirit in that meeting, that phrase means so much to me. We ended the meeting my singing "I Believe in Christ" and wow! The tears were flowing as I really thought about what I was singing. I Believe in Christ! I really do, and I know that I can help others feel that same love for him as I serve the next 18 months!

I don't really know what else to tell you. My weeks been great, it seems to have flown by and I just continue to learn so much! I am hoping that package gets here in time, each day that goes by makes me a bit more nervous it'll show up just after I leave and just chase me around the country.... haha! :D Thank you for sending it though, I'm sure it'll make it. Also, good luck on you game tomorrow! Though that's quite the drive! Let me know how they do. And I cannot believe you got such a great deal on those trees and stuff for the yard! It's going to look so different by the time I get home, I won't recognize it anymore! You'll have to show me pictures if anything too different changes, I'd like to see how it goes! I wish I was there to help, but not really, because I'd rather be here.... hehe:)

Anyway, I love you all soooooo much! Thank you so much for you letters and stuff from home, it helps keep me grounded and I love to hear from everyone!

Love forever,
your missionary,
Sis Marks :)

Hey everyone!!!!!

Wow! This first week went by in a whirlwind! I can't believe it's Thursday already! I'm sorry I couldn't get back you right away, my P-Day is later than I thought it would be, obviously.... :) However, I love getting your letters throughout the week, It's fun to think about what I'm going to tell you and how to respond. I feel like I have so much to say, and I don't even know where to start! Hopefully I won't get too long winded and it'll make a little bit of sense as you read it! :)

This week has been incredible! I love love loved every moment of it! I feel like I've learned more and drawn closer to God more in this week than I ever have before. There's been a ton of spiritual stuff that has happened and I've tried to make note of a few of those things to tell you. The first thing I wanted to tell you about is a video we watched on Sunday from an old devotional Elder Bednar gave at the MTC a few years ago. It's called "The Character of Christ" and I think that if you can find it, you would love to hear it! It's about an hour long, but it's super good and about selflessness and how to be more like Christ. It really hit my heart as I watched it, and I thought you would love it.

In your first letter you said you were wondering what I was doing at 8 my first night in the MTC, and I was actually already teaching someone! Well, kinda. There were about 50 missionaries in a room, and an investigator in the front, and all 50 were trying to teach this person. It was kinda hard to all work together, so a bit circular of a conversation, but still really cool that teaching is one of the very first things we did in the MTC.

So, I'm super happy that you made me take my cheerios and chocolate chips with me into the MTC, they have been a huge lifesaver! Also, it's a fun taste of home when I'm waxing slightly homesick, and though it's no homemade orange-rolls, it makes me think of home! I feel so blessed for the way my emotions have presented themselves. I lose myself in the work each day and so the only time I have even have to consider being homesick is at night. Even then, though I miss everyone at home, I don't feel like I would rather be any other place than right where I am. I love this gospel and feel so blessed to be a missionary for God and this time and age! I figure I'm here for 18 months of my life anyway, so I might as well give Him my all. If you're going to do something, do it right. That's what you taught me, and that's how I live. #Overkill #TypeRed right, dad?

I love wearing my name tag! Its almost surreal still to look in the mirror and see "Sister Marks, The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints". I feel the honor that it is to wear his name on my chest, and feel so grateful for the trust He has put in me that I get to go  out and help people to know him. Each day here makes me more excited to be in Texas! I love the MTC so much, but I also can't wait to really get in the field. I feel like three weeks is a great amount of time to be here.

So in my district there are three of us that are going to Fort Worth. Me, my companion Sister Day (who's amazing!) and one Elder. The other people in my district are going to Tuscon Arizona, San Jose California, and Bakersfield California. I've already grown really close with everyone in my district, which is a huge blessing as I was kind nervous. Especially about my companion. It is kinda sad though because we've had one Elder that had to go home on Tuesday night because of depression and anxiety disorders. My prayers go out to him as he tries to overcome so that he can come back out to serve the Lord. Sister Day is a huge blessing to have as a companion. She's just the best! She's super sweet and sincere and I already think of her as one of my best friends - funny thing about living with someone 24/7 and not having any one else to really talk to. :D My teachers are Brother Brase and Sister McKay who both got back from their missions within the past year. They're amazing! I feel like I learn so much each class and they are a huge asset in that learning. However, most of it definitely comes from the spirit. It's so unique to be able to be in a place where the spirit is just so strong all the time. What an opportunity for growth that I intend to take full advantage of. My branch president is, funnily enough, President Marks - no relation:) And even better, his wife is named Linda Marks, I'm not even kidding! They're amazing, and I love that whole presidency.

I've also just had a ton of fun as I work and play with everyone here. My whole zone is awesome, even if we're not super close. My district loves frisbee, which is great! So we play catch most days for our "work out" time. We're not allowed to play ultimate, but it's fun to just throw the disk around. I also love how efficient everything is here! I feel like time just means something else when you're at the MTC. I only have another 10 min on the computer, and before I would have been worried because that's not much time, but now I'm wondering who else I can email before my times out! :D

I love you all so much! I hope the Bulldogs win tomorrow! Thank you for all that you do for me, I feel your prayers on my behalf.

Love forever,
Sister Marks

P.S. I'M A MISSIONARY!!!! I love this work, I love Christ and His gospel, and I know there's no where else I'd rather be right now. Love you!

Erika enters the MTC

Erika entered the Missionary Training Center in Prove, UT on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 12:45pm. Her journey to her mission started years ago when she watcher her brother William leave on his mission and she made the firm decision that she too wanted to serve the Lord in the same way some day. After finishing her first year of studies at BYU, she came home and completed her paperwork to serve her mission. She received her call from Salt Lake City in July to serve in the Texas Fort Worth mission with the report date in October. She will serve for approximately 18 months, has computer access once a week to write home, and can call home at Christmas and Mother's Day. So in this blog I will post her weekly letters for anyone who wishes to follow Erika during her mission.

On Sunday, October 9, 2016 she was officially set apart by President Ballard as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Early Monday evening we set off for the 12 hour drive down to Provo, staying the night in Dillon, Montana. Jeff and I took her down, now a tradition as it is the same thing we did with Kylie and William when they left on their missions. Kylie joined us on part of the drive since she was returning to school in Rexburg (she and William had come home for the weekend to see Erika off and to hear her speak in church on Sunday).

We reached Salt Lake City Tuesday afternoon and walked around Temple Square, and then continued the last hour to Provo. That night Erika got together with her cousins (Spencer, Stephanie, Greg and Justin Marks, and Christian Walker) for an hour and half to say good-bye (and for pizza and ice cream :). She was really excited to see them one last time, as well as get some advice from the three return missionaries in the group.

On Wednesday morning, we repeated what we had done with the other two kids. We went up Provo Canyon to Bridal Veil Falls. A beautiful place to spend a little time together before saying good-bye. Then we had lunch at The Olive Garden before taking her to the MTC. If you are not familiar with dropping a missionary off at the MTC, you literally do just drop them off. Pull over to the curb, unload their bags to some waiting missionaries who are there to greet you, give a quick hug, take a picture or two, and off your missionary walks all excited for the next chapter in their life. It is quick, but also perfect in so many ways. We were the first in a line of cars that pulled over to the curb, and when Erika opened the truck door, there was a group of about a dozen missionaries clapping and cheering her as she got out. She looked so happy and excited as she walked away. Another great thing about a quick drop-off is that there isn't much time for tears! (We pulled over on the side of the road a bit later for those :). We are so proud of Erika and how she is living her life. She is so full of life and such a go-getter, that we know she will do great in whatever she is asked to do as she serves the Lord for the next year and a half.
