April 16, 2012 Letter from William

And is most of William's most recent letter.

"It's was a pretty good week! We had another lesson with Clarence that went really well. We had a member there who was just what we needed, she was extremely knowledgeable and had a lot in common with him. Clarance felt the Spirit so strong and I believe we will see some quick progression with him. One of his big problems might be that we believe God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost to be 3 separate individuals.

Kristi is doing really great! She is excited to be baptized May 2nd! Unfortunately her Mom isn't so excited, she came to the last lesson with Kristi and Elizabeth. We taught the plan of salvation and she was polite enough during the lesson but apparently after she got home she wasn't too happy with Kristi and has now given her a bunch of stuff she printed off the internet about "Mormons". Kristi and I have been texting this morning and she said that as she's read it, it makes her feel "physically sick." We are going to meet her tonight and go through whatever she has questions about. Satan has gotten very good at tearing peoples faith apart with that kind of material.

The people we live with are coming back into activity. Brother Heinritz quit smoking when we moved in and is doing really great! Sister Heinritz is warming up a lot and is really friendly with us but has been affected by such material and believes that Joseph Smith and Brigham Young used Polygamy unrighteously. We are going to try and help her gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon because is she had a firm testimony of that then she would know they were true prophets and did no such wicked things.

The Woodruff family is still out of touch! We're trying to get in there but they're running all over the place and really hard to get a hold of. We stopped by last week and talked with her at their doorstep for like 2 minutes but she was on her way out and didn't have time. We've tried calling them since and no luck :(

We were tracting last week and found one man that was mildly interested, we spoke with him on his doorstep for 5 minutes or so and we're going to go back in a couple weeks if he doesn't call us. Elder Brown was inspired to go visit a less active woman that we never have luck getting into. When we knocked on her door she wasn't home but her friend was at her house and she told us to come back in the evening. We asked if we could share a spiritual message with her and she was a little hesitant but let us in. We explained what the Book of Mormon was to her and shared a scripture with her, and invited her to learn more. She accepted! She is Catholic, her name is Anna, she's probably in her early 50's. .....

That is so wonderful about Chelsea getting baptized! I hope she got my letter in time. .....

Yesterday Elder Brown and I both spoke in Sacrament meeting. He spoke on Sacrifice for 10 minutes(because of the language challenge) and I was asked to speak on obedience for 20 minutes. It went really great. That was in the Chatfield ward, we have really gained the trust in both wards. We've had both bishops say how good of Elders we have right now, so use them! haha, that's really what we need is the members support. I like both bishops and both ward mission leaders, everyone has their challenges but they're all good men with pure desire to serve. I know I'm not excluded from having challenges myself.

We have DM once a week on Thursday at 10:00. This week the ZL's are coming. It's really not that hard to organize and be a District Leader you just have a bit more to worry about. And other missionaries expect you to know almost everything haha.

We're eating pretty good. I have put on about 10 lbs on my mission but have been really trying the last week or so to be more aware. It happens slowly. It can be tough because every single night we have a big dinner with the members and 90% of the time there is some dessert they want us to eat. I'm not exercising nearly as much as I used to, so I really look forward to Mondays because we can really run and get our heart rate up. I'm doing my best with this.

I would say my greatest challenge is being energetic in the morning and starting off my day right, and just the amount of work required in missionary work. My greatest Joys come from feeling direction from the Spirit and seeing it change peoples lives. I love being a part of miracles that are life changing for people.

The mission has really changed it's focus from teaching 20 lessons or more a week to focusing on finding. Obviously we still shoot for 20 lessons but we will be really making more effort to find people. The mission has a goal or reactivating and baptizing 1000 people this year! Last year we had 884.

I love you all so much, I want you to know I am enjoying the work! I'm far from perfect but I'm doing my best. I miss you all like crazy!

With Love,
Elder W. Marks

April 9th Letter from William

Sorry this is a week late, so I will be updating two weeks of letters today.

Jeff was lucky enough to catch Will on the computer, so they were actually able to chat back and forth a bit. Here is a bit of what William had to say:

"Kristi is on date for May 2nd!! And she's been brought a friend to the first lesson, her name is Elizabeth and she wants to learn more. At first Kristi's Mom didn't like her investigating but now she wants to learn more so we're going to teach the Plan of Salvation at her house with Her Mom! .....

I have felt the Lords blessing so much as well, I really wish you could meet my new companion. He's from Samoa! His name is Elder Brown, he always jokes that his name isn't Samoan haha. He's one of the most humble good men I've met on my mission. He started learning the language 8 months ago, so there is some complications there but when he bears testimony it's very powerful because it's simplified and pure. He misses his people very much though and has been doing his best to adjust.

This last week has been one of the happiest on my mission. We found 3 new investigators, and taught 21 lessons! (Elizabeth being one of the new gators). One is a Chinese foreign exchange student named Zach who wants to learn more about our religion. He's 16, we found him when we were invited to an Easter egg hunt some members were having and they had a bunch of their neighbors there that we talked to. The people Zach is staying with were super open to having us in their home to teach him...we might be able to teach them too!  The third is a man in his mid-60's that we tracted by the Spirit into, his name is Clarence. We spoke with him for 3 hours outside his house, he just had a ton of questions, and we read from the Book of Mormon with him. He is a strong Bible believing Christian and he said he didn't find any contradiction with the Book of Mormon and wants to have us back to learn more. We're going to go back this coming Thursday and bringing a member with us who converted to Mormonism from being a Baptist. .....

It's really great to find more people to teach, that's really what we need. When I first got here we had like 6 real investigating people/families to teach, we'll continue to focus on finding. I know there are people ready to receive this message. Thank you for keeping them in your prayers :)

Mom wanted to know how many people were in the district, there's 4 companionships total (all Elders), and as of today we all have cars! Also we each cover 2 wards accept the Clement Park Elders because their area is so big. .....

Your testimonies meant so much to me, it was a great Easter for me to reflect on things as well. Life, family, the atonement, my mission etc.

Those pics were really great! The fam is lookin' good! :)  Garrett in particular looks different to me, time for a hair cut dude, rofl! ......

I'm proud of each one of you and send all my Love!

Oute alofa ia oe (I love you)

Here are some bits and pieces from Elder Marks' latest email, sounds like he has had some neat experiences the last week or so.

"So first off I've got to tell you about this girl we've been teaching. Her name is Kristi, she's 18. She took the first 2 missionary lessons a couple months ago because her boyfriend was a member. They broke up and she didn't have any interest in taking the lessons at that time. We re-established contact about 1 1/2 weeks ago and have been meeting with her ever since but not teaching her the lessons because we both felt she wasn't quite ready and we needed to build the relationship first. She watched 3 of the 4 sessions of conference with us. We were at dinner Sunday night after watching conference with her and she sent us a series of texts talking about how she felt like baptism was something she really wants right now. We've been answering questions that she has and talking a little about baptism. She said she wants to take the lessons as fast as she can and get baptized! What a feeling!

I got a training call! We have transfer meeting tomorrow and I will be training a new missionary strait from the MTC! I'm super excited to work with someone so new with so much fire for the work! Along with me, there are two other companionships in the district who are getting new missionaries as well so it will be a very young district. I know we will see many miracles take place in the coming weeks and months. It seems a little crazy to take over the area...both wards after 2-1/2 weeks of being here, and then training, and still trying to figure out this DL stuff...There is a lot I need to improve personally and this might be the Lords way of encouraging that change."

"I'm super excited for Kylie to be able to go through the temple! It is something I wish I could be there for. It was great to see the MTC choir sing at conference! I was thinking a bit about that too. I'm excited to serve a mission at the same time as Kylie.

We haven't had any further contact with John from McFatties or the Woodruffs  :o(  Elder Galenzoski has had a lot of people he's wanted to say goodbye to so we've been going around doing that for him.  The biggest thing this area needs is more people to teach and I feel like there are some real potential investigators right now that we need to secure, and many who we need to find that are waiting for us. Finding will be a bit focus for us."

Your Missionary,
Elder William Jeffrey Marks
